Improvement measures around Kurfürstendamm

Since 1984 there have been design guidelines for Kurfürstendamm. They are titled "Linear Rules for Kurfürstendamm" and contain the central requirements for the appearance of the public space.
In 2008, the rules were evaluated, and the evaluators categorized the extent to which the 25-year-old rules had been implemented and whether they met the requirements of the present day. They found that:

  •  the "Linear Rules" had proved to be a success and were applied systematically;
  •  there is a need for action, in particular, at squares around Kurfürstendamm;
  •  on the boulevard, shortcomings should be eliminated with the paving;
  •  new objects such as dog service stations are to be integrated into the linear design;
  •  the so-called clean-up programme is to be continued in order to counteract the tendency toward overfurnishing.

The Active Centres subsidy programme should contribute to the execution of these measures. The attractiveness of Kurfürstendamm and its wide sidewalks should increase with the gradual improvement of the sidewalk surfaces and the upgrading of the street furniture. In 2010/2011, € 250,000.00 in subsidies along with matching private funds were invested. Other investments have followed.

At the information event "Kurfürstendamm all decked out" (Der Kurfürstendamm putzt sich raus), the goals were discussed with citizens and professionals, and a consensus was formed, particularly for upgrading and improving the sidewalk surfaces. In combination with the continuation of the clean-up programme and the harmonization of the street furniture, it was possible to see the first stages of implementation for the boulevard's 125th anniversary in 2011.  A reference stretch for a redesign between Joachimstaler Platz and Meinekestraße was completed in summer 2011.

In May 2011, the brochure "Going Down New Roads. Improvement Measures for Kurfürstendamm" appeared and informed about the planned measures along Kurfürstendamm. To obtain private investments in the improvement of the public sector, the content of the Linear Rules have been updated and outlined in a way that is appropriate for the times.
