Moderation Procedure Hardenberg Square (Hardenbergplatz)

A square? Not really, since so far it is a place for buses and taxis, an area for a quick change from one means of transport to another - a transit zone.

The potential for Hardenberg Square to be a link between the Zoo Train Station (Bahnhof Zoo), Zoological Garden (Zoologischer Garten), Bikini Berlin, the new Waldorf Astoria hotel in the Zoofenster high rise and the nearby Kurfürstendamm has definitely not been maximized.  The area lacks the necessary quality of life.

To change the existing grievance and to achieve a design concept according to its citywide importance, the program “Aktive Zentren” is providing means to improve the environment of Bahnhof Zoo and the coordination and integration of public administration, relevant actors and residents. The process started in 2013.

Within a moderation procedure with main users, residents and key stakeholders, views of different claims and demands as well as urban planning principles for a design concept for the environment and space were exchanged. Based on the circumstances given, the implementation of an underground car park seems not realizable at this point of time. Therefore, the objective is to improve the current inadequate situation. The development and restructuring at a later date should not thereby be prevented. Now, it is to look for a solution for the next 5 to 10 Years which allows a significant improvement of the current shortcomings.

In a preceding technical concept phase in 2014, traffic solutions for the reorganization of the Hardenberg square will be specified. As part of a subsequent peer review procedure considerations for the design features will be carried out. On a site conference in fall 2014, the results will be presented to the public.

The content coordination and management is performed by the Senate Department for Urban Development and the Environment. Contractor to carry out the moderation process is UrbanPlan Society for project management, architecture, urban planning, structure planning and research mbH.
